Magma inks m-pipe project with Tullow on TEN

Tullow Oil has awarded a contract to UK-based carbon composite pipe manufacturer Magma Global for 2.5km of flowline for the deepwater TEN project offshore Ghana.

TEN, which comprises the Tweneboa, Enyenra, Ntomme (TEN) fields, came onstream in August 2016 via MODEC’s Prof. John Evans Atta Mills FPSO, 60km offshore Western Ghana in about 1500m water depth.

Magma wasn't able to disclose what it's pipe was being used for on the project, but said that using Magma's m-pipe meant that a local infield, 4800-ton multi-purpose construction vessel, on long-term charter to Tullow, could be used for its deployment, instead of needing a 14,000-ton specialist lay vessel.

Tullow will use a 6in spoolable carbon composite m-pipe, which will be deployed from a 10m-diameter reel with a 20-ton tensioner, in total weighing under 100-ton, compared with over 500-ton for the equivalent steel flexible pipe product normally used in the industry.

"Being able to use a small vessel has reduced overall costs by 65%. Aside from the cost benefits, being a carbon fibre composite m-pipe is also much stronger and, most importantly, does not rust in seawater or corrode with exposure to H2S, CO2 or some of the more aggressive chemicals involved in oil and gas production," says Magma.

Magma Global COO Charles Tavner said: “At 1800m this is another deepwater deployment in a production application for Magma m-pipe, in what has been a very active period for us. Reducing the operational costs through the adoption of proven new technologies is a great example of the impact Magma can have by selecting the right pipe and deployment system for developments."
