Woodside, ABB plan offshore battery first

Australia's Woodside Energy is setting out to achieve a world first by installing a microgrid with a 1MW lithium-ion PowerStore Battery energy storage system on an offshore platform.

Working with power and automation group ABB, the solution will be installed on Woodside's Goodwyn A platform, on Australia's Northwest Shelf, in 2H 2018, marking the first offshore application of such technology in the world.

The installation of the 1 MWh PowerStore Battery will reduce the need for back-up capacity, known as spinning reserve, in Goodwyn A’s power generation system, says Woodside. As a result Goodwyn A’s use of fuel gas will be reduced by more than 2000tonne/yr, allowing for incremental LNG production and delivering an estimated 5% decrease in the platform’s CO2 emissions.

Woodside Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Shaun Gregory said: “Developing our energy storage capability on Goodwyn A is a first step in enabling Woodside to accelerate scaling of the application in larger oil and gas assets, both offshore and onshore. It is also a clear example of how Woodside is partnering with market-leaders in innovation and technology to deliver against the company’s strategy and business priorities,” he said.

Goodwyn A is about 135km northwest of Karratha in Western Australia and has been operating since 1995.

The Goodwyn A facility is more than 290m-tall and stands in 131m water depth. The platform combines production, re-injection, utilities and accommodation facilities. The 55,000-tonne production facility

is secured to the seabed by 36 piles, which allow the structure to support its operating load and withstand cyclone conditions.

Goodwyn A is designed for up to 30 production wells, including five re-injection wells, and has a daily production capacity of up to 36,000 tonnes of gas and 11,000 tonnes of condensate.
