BP is on track to start up its Juniper project off Trinidad in the coming weeks, and bring Eni’s Zohr online offshore Egypt by the end of 2017. The supermajor was hopeful in its Q2 2017 earnings call, announcing the possibly of having final investment decisions (FID) for additional projects in Gulf of Mexico, Egypt, and India.

Earlier this year, BP revealed its goal to start up five offshore projects in 2017, making it the company’s busiest year in its history for commissioning new projects. So far, two of those, West Nile Delta off Egypt, and Quad 204 in the North Sea have begun. Now, BP is moving to finish its goal with Juniper, Woodside Energy’s Persephone, and Zohr.
Offshore Trinidad, BP said that its Juniper facility is progressing through the final commissioning activities, with start up expected in the coming weeks. The US$2 billion Juniper platform set sail to the southeast coast of Trinidad earlier this year in January.
Juniper is BP Trinidad and Tobago’s (bpTT) first subsea field development. Production capacity is anticipated to be about 590 MMcf/d, which will flow through the Mahogany B offshore hub.The project includes a platform made up of jacket, piles and topsides, and corresponding subsea infrastructure which will be installed 50mi offshore Trinidad, at 360ft water depth.
Moving to the Eni-operated Zohr project, BP said that it is scheduled to be online by the end of the year. The project was originally scheduled to come online in 2018.
Zohr is in the Mediterranean Sea in the Shorouk concession, about 120mi north of Port Said in some 4900ft water depth. The giant field is estimated to hold approximately 30 Tcf of gas.
Also offshore Egypt, BP sees the potential for Atoll to come online this year.
“I think, Atoll, the first phase in Egypt has potential to be ahead of schedule. It's not inconceivable it could come on before the end of this year, but probably first quarter of next year, that's moved fast very, very quickly,” Bob Dudley, BP CEO said in the company’s Q2 earnings call.
In late-July, Woodside said that the Persephone project off Western Australia will start up this month (August 2017) at 30% under budget and six months ahead of schedule.
Persephone is 135km northwest of Karatha, in production license WA-1-L. The project consists of two big bore deviated productions wells tied into a subsea production manifold with production fluids tied back 6.7km via a 12in. flexible flowline to the existing North Rankin A facility on the existing North Rankin Complex.
Dudley also revealed in the company’s Q2 earnings call that there could possibly be two Gulf of Mexico projects come to the FID stage, including Atlantis Phase 3, “a very significant oil development.”
“The costs are coming down. That's clearly got great prospectivity there. That's one [Atoll] I would think about. We've got another one in the Gulf of Mexico we may consider, we need to work with our partners on that,” Dudley said.
Dudley vaguely said BP is looking to sanction other projects in India.
“You might see us with additional FIDs down the road in India. We've sanctioned the first one with the R-Series but there's others in India. And we've just recently sanctioned Angelin in Trinidad. So we'll pace these out.”
“We'll be very selective about them, but we've got some good projects,” said Dudley. “I'd also add, some of those are oil.”
Dudley also revealed that there is a development concept for Kosmos Energy’s Tortue project offshore Senegal.
“We have a development concept now for Tortue, but we can alter this depending on discovery of other resources out there,” Dudley said. “We'll be drilling some wells in Mauritania this year. All of those things could change our thinking in terms of what could be a fairly complex resource area and maybe even further in the North and Mauritania there are some oil. But I think what that discovery essentially does is just demonstrate the high potential of the basin itself.”
