BP picks SLB, Subsea 7 for Mad Dog

Oilfield services giant Schlumberger and Subsea 7 have won contracts on BP's Mad Dog 2 deepwater development in the US Gulf of Mexico.

Subsea 7 and Schlumberger, under the Subsea Production Systems alliance with OneSubsea, have been awarded a subsea production systems contract.

Subsea 7 also has a lump sum engineering, procurement, construction and installation scope for the subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines and associated subsea architecture.

Subsea 7 estimates the value of the contract for Mad Dog between US$300-500 million.

The scope for the alliance includes subsea manifolds, trees, control system, single and multiphase meters, water analysis sensors, intervention tooling and test equipment for producer and water injection wells associated with the project.

These contracts follow Samsung Heavy Industries' $1.27 billion win for Mad Dog 2's floating production unit (FPU) in January. In early March, Wood Group announced SHI selected them to provide detailed engineering and procurement services for the topsides for the FPU's topsides.Wood Group's Specialist Technical Solutions business also picked up a $4.89 million contract for subsea engineering and project management services to the Mad Dog 2 project.

BP sanctioned the $9 billion Mad Dog 2 development in December 2016. Its partners BHP Billiton and Chevron later followed suit. The development will be about 190mi south of New Orleans.

Mad Dog Phase 2 is in the deepwater Green Canyon area, and will include a new floating production platform with the capacity to produce up to 140,000 gross b/d from up to 14 production wells. It is a southern and southwestern extension of the existing Mad Dog field, with the production facility due to be moored about 6mi to the southwest of the existing Mad Dog platform, some 190mi south of New Orleans, in 4500ft water depth.

The current Mad Dog platform has the capacity to produce up to 80,000 b/d and 60 MMcf/d of natural gas.

Offshore installation activities are scheduled for 2019 and 2020. Subsea 7's contract includes the first substantial project in the US to use its Swagelining polymer lining technology.

Subsea 7's project management and engineering will take place in Houston with support from Subsea 7's Global Project Centre in London.

For Schlumberger, project management, including engineering, fabrication, installation support and life of field activities will be managed by US-based resources and operations in both Houston and Louisiana.
