Samsung Heavy Industries awarded Wood Group a contract to provide detailed engineering and procurement services for the topsides for BP’s Mad Dog Phase 2 floating production unit. The US$80 million contract follows the December 2016 completion of interim agreement period (IAP) early work, which was valued at $4.5 million.
Additionally, as part of the recently signed global services agreement with BP, Wood Group’s Specialist Technical Solutions (STS) business was awarded a $4.89 million contract for subsea engineering and project management services to the Mad Dog 2 project. That work includes gas lift system interface design, geospatial information system support, subsea controls engineering and geotechnical engineering support.
Mad Dog 2 is the second platform designed by Wood Group for BP in the Gulf of Mexico Mad Dog field.
Mad Dog Phase 2 is in the deepwater Green Canyon area, and will include a new floating production platform with the capacity to produce up to 140,000 gross b/d from up to 14 production wells. It is a southern and southwestern extension of the existing Mad Dog field, with the production facility due to be moored about 6mi to the southwest of the existing Mad Dog platform, some 190mi south of New Orleans, in 4500ft water depth.
Just last month, Chevron reached its final investment decision (FID) for Mad Dog 2, paving the way for the BP-operated project to reach first oil in 2021.
In early February, partner BHP Billiton’s board approved spending US$2.2 billion for its share of development costs. In December 2016, BP sanctioned the $9 billion investment.
