The Subsea UK awards winners have been officially announced, following an awards dinner at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, during Subsea Expo – Europe’s largest subsea focused exhibition and conference.
Hydro Group won the Subsea Company of the Year award, among the finalists JDR Cable Systems and N-Sea.
Doug Whyte, managing director at Hydro Group (pictured), said: “Being presented with this award is testament to the growth and success the company has achieved over the past three decades. I am proud of our team for their dedicated support, adapting to the ever changing industry, while also securing a stronghold in additional markets including oceanographic and renewable energies, and defense.
“We have also invested significantly into international markets including Canada, Europe and the Far East, further supported by our Singapore-based division Hydro Group Asia, formed in 2013. This is an exciting time for the whole team, and we remain committed to the development of market-leading subsea cables and connectors.”
In the Global Exports award category, JDR came out first, with JFD Global and Ocean Installer also in the running for the prize.
The Innovation for Safety award went to The Underwater Centre, among the shortlisted Canyon Offshore and again JDR Cable Systems.
Proserv scooped the Innovation and Technology award for its A2G subsea electronics module (read more below), while Aidan O’Sullivan from Universal Pegasus was recognized as the Young Emerging Talent.
The Small Company of the Year award was handed to EC-OG, the company behind Subsea Power Hub project.
Ian Donald of Enpro Subsea was recognized as the individual who has made the most outstanding contribution to the subsea sector.
Donald is managing director and a founder of Enpro Subsea, a specialist subsea enhanced production company. He was previously founder and managing director of DES Operations, which developed the MARS (Multiple Application Re-injection System). The company was acquired by Cameron in 2007 and Mr Donald remained VP at Cameron Mars until 2011.
Neil Gordon, chief executive of Subsea UK commented: “The past two years have been extremely challenging for the oil and gas sector, however we have continued to see an unwavering commitment from companies of all sizes to drive a real change across our industry.
“Once again, we received an incredible standard of entries for this year’s awards, demonstrating the greatest attributes of the UK subsea sector. Despite the ongoing challenges we face as an industry, it’s vital that we continue to celebrate and recognise the finest talent, leadership and contributions as we adapt to this new environment in the coming years.”
Commenting on Donald’s award, Gordon added: “Ian has been engaged in the sector for over 30 years and fulfilled a number of key roles within the operator, major service companies and SME environments with demonstrable success. He is a well-respected figure within the subsea industry and his recognition tonight is thoroughly deserved.”
A2G
Proserv says that, unlike previous SEM designs, A2G goes beyond the normal limitations of data speed, instrumentation power supplies, accessibility on subsea networks, and obsolescence management of subsea technology and provides a platform for legacy support for brownfield subsea systems not always available from the original equipment manufacturer.
A2G is being successfully used by leading global oil majors and independent operators. What makes it ‘game-changing’ is the way it manages communication signals and power and the intelligent way that it configures and communicates data at different optimized rates independent of other signals or noise at each subsea well. The on-board highly adaptive communications controller enables data speeds 10- times faster than otherwise available within the industry, with power capacity to meet the most demanding of instruments required.
