Petrobras received nearly US$61 million ($204 million BRL) on Friday (18 November) in recovered funds stemming from the Lava Jato corruption scandal, with Petrobras President Pedro Parente expecting to win back a total of $1.6 billion ($5.5 billion BRL).

"Petrobras is taking all necessary measures for the full compensation of the damage suffered, including with regard to its reputation," Parente said. "The value of this gesture today (18 November) is not just the millions that the company recovers, but the value that no one is above the law. We are proud of Petrobras' active participation in this process of transformation."
Brazilian prosecutors were able to recover the amount from winning collaboration agreements and leniency signed by Brazil’s Ministério Público Federal no Paraná (MPF-PR) in Operation Lava Jato, Petrobras said. There are eight actions of administrative misconduct, with compensation potential at some $5.5 billion that Petrobras acts as co-author - seven MPF and the union, the company said.
The $61 million, according to MPF-PR, was collected through collaboration agreements with individuals and legal entitles, and was deposited in the court account of the 13th federal criminal court of Curitibia, expected to be transferred to Petrobras in the coming days. In total, 21 agreements were signed with the Lava Jato task force, consisting of 18 individual collaborations, and three leniency agreements made with legal entities. So far in the operation, there have been 70 cooperation agreements, six leniency agreements and one conduct adjustment term completed.
“This is the third return held for Petrobras under Operation Lava Jato and the largest in more than two and a half years of investigation,” MPF-PR said.
In addition to the $61 million, approximately $149 million ($500 million BRL) has been returned to the state, the MPF-PR said.
"There are more than $200 million BRL ($59.6 million) that are returning to the public coffers by adding up the values that have been returned to Petrobras on two other occasions. There has never been a recovery of assets as large in the history of Brazil and this is due to the work that has been developed within the Lava Jato, with the use of innovative and efficient techniques of research and joint action among all involved bodies,” Deltan Dallagnol, attorney and coordinator of the Lava Jato task force said.
