Leak suspends Husky drilling off Canada

Drilling operations have been suspended at Husky Energy’s North Amethyst field offshore Canada, after a leak occurred today (15 July), according to the Canada-Newfoundland & Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB).

The Henry Goodrich, from Transocean.

Earlier today, Husky reported an unauthorized discharge which resulted in the impairment of safety critical equipment on the Henry Goodrich mobile offshore drilling unit.

“Approximately 1800 L of hydraulic fluid was released to the environment during drilling operations,” the C-NLOPB said. “This release in fluid caused a rapid drop in pressure which immediately activated the blowout preventer (BOP). The BOP functioned as intended and secured the well.”

According to the Canadian regulator, there were no injuries reported.  The well at North Amethyst has been secured and all drilling operations have been suspended.

The C-NLOPB is reviewing the incident and Husky Energy is continuing to investigate.

Transocean’s Henry Goodrich harsh environment semisubmersible is currently in a two-year contract with Husky for ongoing development drilling at the South White Rose Extension and North Amethyst field, and near-field exploration,at a dayrate of US$275,000. The contract is set to expire in May 2018.

Production from the White Rose field and extensions is tied back to the SeaRose FPSO (floating production, storage and offloading) vessel.

Husky is the operator of the White Rose field and satellite extensions, holding a 72.5% working interest in the main field and a 68.875% interest in the satellite fields, which include North Amethyst, South White Rose and West White Rose.
