Drilling has commenced at Mubadala Petroleum's Sri Trang-1 exploration well in the Gulf of Thailand, using the Atwood Orca jackup.
Sri Trang-1 is in the reservation area of the G1/48 concession, approximately 18km north northeast of the Manora oil development.
It is being drilled in 40m of water to approximately 2590m measured depth, and is expected to take about 10 days.
Joint venture partner Tap Oil said the well’s objective is to evaluate the primary Middle Miocene lacustrine sands target with secondary targets of Late Miocene fluvial sands. The Middle Miocene lacustrine sands target is the main reservoir level at the Manora oilfield.
A valid test of the primary objective Middle Miocene sands is essential as it will validate the hydrocarbon prospectivity of the Northern Kra basin and de-risk dependent prospects immediately to the west of Sri Trang-1.
The outcome of the well will determine any likely development, including a scenario where a production platform is tied back to the Manora production facility. The G1/48 reservation area is a joint venture between Mubadala (60%), Tap (30%) and Northern Gulf Petroleum (10%).
In April, Mubadala hit oil at two wells in the Manora field, offshore Thailand. The MNA-15 well encountered 44m of oil pay in three separate reservoirs. The MNA-16 well encountered 37m oil pay in four separate reservoirs.
