Kosmos Energy says its Greater Tortue Complex offshore Mautitania has the potential to create a new "world-scale" LNG development, following the results of its latest appraisal well.
The firm said the results of its Ahmeyim-2 appraisal well, which delineated the Ahmeyim and Guembeul gas discoveries, near to the Tortue-1 discovery well in Block C-8, had pushed the resource estimate for the Greater Tortue Complex up to 20 Tcf, from 17 Tcf Pmean gross resource estimate.
It says there was fluid pressure communication between the Tortue-1, Guembeul-1 and Ahmeyim-2 wells, demonstrating "field-wide reservoir continuity and indicate Tortue West is a large, simple gas field," totalling some 15 Tcf Pmean gross resources (up from an earlier 11 Tcf estimate).
The Ahmeyim-2 well was drilled about 5km northwest, and 200m downdip of the Tortue-1 discovery well, in some 2800m water depth in the West African Transform Margin.
The well encountered 78m (256ft) of net gas pay in two "excellent quality" reservoirs, including 46m (151ft) in the Lower Cenomanian and 32m 105ft) in the underlying Albian.
"With this well, we believe we have proven sufficient gas resource to underpin a world-scale LNG project in the Tortue West structure alone. The combination of the resource size and quality continue to support our view that Tortue is a competitive source of LNG and we are working towards commercialization,” said Andrew G. Inglis, chairman and chief executive officer.
“We now plan to drill the first of three independent oil tests in our blocks offshore Mauritania and Senegal, starting with the Teranga-1 well, in the Cayar Offshore Profond Block, offshore Senegal.”
Kosmos operates the Ahmeyim-2 well with 90% equity and is joined by its partner SMHPM at 10%. Kosmos believes the Tortue Greater Complex extends into the St. Louis Offshore Profond Block offshore Senegal, including the Tortue East and Tortue North prospects.
C-8 is one of three blocks Kosmos operates under production sharing contracts.
