Transocean will lay off about 80 jobs that were part of the Transocean Discoverer Americas ultra deepwater unit, which Statoil canceled in December.

The 70-80 lay offs, according to the Texas Workforce Commission, will come from the Transocean’s Houston office, with affected workers receiving a severance package.
Should the Discoverer Americas get awarded another contract, Transocean plans on recalling affected workers again, however, the company does not foresee a new contract in the current environment.
Statoil ended the contract with the drillship, which had been under contract since 2009, five months ahead of schedule. The Discoverer Americas had been supporting the Norwegian giant’s exploration activities in East and North Africa, and the Gulf of Mexico.
“All operations were performed with solid drilling efficiency and a good safety culture. Without additional activity lined up, we unfortunately have to let the rig go prior to contract end,” Tore Aarreberg, head of rig procurement said about the rig in December.
Last month, Transocean notified the Texas Workforce Commission of 130-140 job cuts from the Discoverer Deep Seas drillship due to a contract cancellation, in addition to the reduction of 40-50 jobs on the Deepwater Champion due to a contract cancellation from Murphy Oil. Both rigs were operating in the Gulf of Mexico.
Last month, Esso sent an early termination of its contract with the GSF Development Driller I semisubmersible. The rig's drilling contract is expected to end in May 2016 with the demobilization completed in June 2016.
