Non-destructive testing (NDT) company Sonomatic is investing US$5.7 million (£4 million) in building a brand new multi-disciplined facility that will allow the company to cover the entire range of NDT inspections in Aberdeen.

Sonomatic’s new facility will create a center of excellence for all NDT, NII and Advanced NDT requirements and will pull together the highly specialized technicians and engineers from the existing Sonomatic specialized services division, the company said. There is also room to extend its facilities and services to cover the addition of a paint shop and possible other offerings.
Sonomatic’s direct investment envisaged at this stage is to be in excess of $5.7 million (£4 million), including the land, building and fit-out costs. In terms of employment, provided by the overall investment, Sonomatic will first of all maintain 50 jobs within the construction industry to build our new base. Thereafter, in the short term the company will likely create around 15 full time jobs, with a long term view of creating anything from 20 to 70 full time jobs, depending on the success of its initiatives and successful bids via its Rope Access Division.
Scottish Minister for Business and Energy, Fergus Ewing attended the groundbreaking event of The Core, the new state of the art facility, along with Sonomatic UK business development manager and RAIS (rope access inspection services) Division Manager, Tracy Anderson.
“The Core will immediately feature three radiography bays, two pressure test bays along with the ability to service pipework requiring heat treatment,” said Anderson. “Our specialized technicians will offer eddy current, magnetic particle inspections, dye-pen and ultrasonic inspections at the base as well as providing them as a mobile service.”
The location has been very carefully selected with emphasis given to the client’s logistical requirements. Sonomatic recognizes that during high turnaround shutdown seasons, every mile traveled counts and adds to the time the client/asset is kept waiting for the return of their equipment. To optimize the ability to reduce this time and to ensure Sonomatic have addressed their environmental responsibilities, they have chosen to invest in a new site development, named “The Core,” located in Bridge of Don to the north of Aberdeen City Centre, the company said.
The Core is located approximately 4mi from Aberdeen Harbour, 1mi from the AECC. It will encompass all major industrial sites, passing by Portlethan, Kingswells and Dyce as well as being a feeder route for all inner city clients.
