US rig count drops nearly 60% year-on-year

Baker Hughes’ rig count for December 2015 shows decreases across five of the six regions with the US suffering the most, representing a 59.3% drop year-on-year, and the Middle East with the only increase.

According to the report, the US had a total of 59 rigs operating offshore in December 2014. This fell to only 24 in December 2015. Month-on-month, the US dropped seven rigs, representing a 22.5% decrease.

Globally the rig count dropped 31.3% from 399 in December 2014, to 274 offshore rigs in the same period in 2015. 

Month-on-month, global rig activity fell from 290 in November to 274 in December, marking a 5.5% drop.

Internationally (i.e. excluding North America), rig numbers dropped from 338 in December 2014, to just 250 in the same period in 2015, with Africa taking the hardest hit.

The rig count for Africa in December 2015 was 27, marking a 42.6% slump from December 2014’s 47. The region did however show a slight increase month-over-month from 26 offshore rigs in November 2015 to 27 rigs in December, representing a 3.8% increase.

Asia Pacific dropped 32.7% from 113 rigs in December 2014 to 76 in the same month in 2015. The region also fell 10.5% month-over-month - November to December 2015 - from 85 to 76.

The rig count offshore Europe took a 31.3% hit year-on-year from 51 rigs in December 2014 to 35 in 2015. Rig numbers offshore Europe only fell 5.4% month-on-month from 37 rigs to 35 in December.

Rigs offshore Latin America dropped from 82 rigs in December 2014 to 57 rigs in December 2015, representing a 30.5% decrease. Latin America did show a month-over-month increase. The region went from 52 offshore rigs in November 2015 to 57 last month, representing a 9.6% increase.

The Middle East was the only region to see an increase in rig numbers, with 22.2% more rigs in December 2015 at 55, compared to December 2014’s 45. The region did see a month-over-month drop of four rigs, marking a 6.8% decrease.
