Statoil digs deeper in GoM

Statoil’s exploration and discovery efforts in the Gulf of Mexico are moving forward, as the Norwegian giant announced the spudding of the Yeti appraisal well earlier this month on 12 August.

The Yeti appraisal well is located 2mi southeast of the Yeti exploration well (Yeti-1), in the Walker Ridge Block 160 at about 5900ft water depth.

The well will appraise the excellent quality Miocene reservoirs seen in Yeti-1, and test additional sections not penetrated in the original discovery, joint venture partner Anadarko Petroleum said in its 2Q 2015 report.

The well is being drilled using Transocean’s Discoverer Americas drillship.

Yeti-1, drilled with the Maersk Developer semisubmersible, discovered more than 270ft of net oil pay in Miocene-aged reservoirs. The well was spudded in late 2014, according to Anadarko.

When Statoil announced the Yeti-1 discovery in April 2015, the company said that its drilling efficiency with Yeti was among the best of any well drilled in Walker Ridge, achieving a rate of approximately 123m (400ft) per day.

Statoil is the operator of Yeti with 50% interest. Partners include Anadarko (37.5%) and Samson (12.5%).
