Chevron Australia made an additional gas discovery at the Greater Gorgon Area in the Carnarvon Basin, offshore northwest Australia.
The Isosceles-1 exploration discovery well found about 134m of net gas pay in the Triassic Mungaroo Sands in 968m water depth.
The well is in the WA-392-P permit area about 95km northwest of Barrow Island, off the coast of Western Australia.
“This discovery is a continuation of our exploration and further positions our company as supplier for future liquefied natural gas (LNG) demand in the Asia-Pacific region,” said Melody Meyer, president, Chevron Asia-Pacific Exploration and Production.
The Greater Gorgon area has proven hydrocarbon reserves of 13.8 Tcf. Chevron Australia is the operator of WA-392-P with a 50% interest, while Shell Australia and Mobil Australia Resources each hold a 25% interest.
In Januaury, Chevron inked a sales and purchase agreement with SK LNG Trading Pte. Under this contract, SK, which is part of an industrial conglomerate in South Korea, will receive 4.15 million tonne of LNG over a five-year period starting in 2017.
Over 75% of Chevron's equity LNG from Gorgon will be committed to customers in Asia from 2017-2022.
