Statoil and its partners have increased recoverable resource estimates for the Krafla area in the mature Norwegian northern North Sea basin to 140-250 MMboe after a two-well campaign in the area.
According to Statoil, the latest appraisal well on the Krafla Main Tarbert discovery, and a discovery made at Krafla North in December, "increase the robustness" of the Krafla field development project.
Since 2011, five discoveries have been made in the Krafla area, in licenses PL035 and PL272: Krafla Main, Krafla West, Askja West, Askja East and Krafla North.
The latest appraisal well, about 1km northwest of the Krafla Main discovery well from 2011, saw the resource estimate for Krafla Main increase to 50-82 MMboe. A gross oil column of 260m and net reservoir of 85m in the upper and middle Tarbert formation with good reservoir properties was encountered.
"Altogether we expect to have discovered recoverable resources in a range of 140-220 MMboe, 25km southwest of Oseberg South and 150km west of Bergen. These are very substantial volumes for a mature area of the shelf," says Irene Rummelhoff, Statoil senior vice president for exploration on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS).
Det norske holds a 25% working interest in PL035 and PL272. Statoil Petroleum AS is the operator with 50% working interest and Svenska Exploration AS is partner with 25%.
