DNV GL to SURF Maria for US$3.95 million

Wintershall Norge awarded DNV GL a US$3.95 million contract to be the sole supplier for the combined role of independent verification body (IVB) and third party design verification scope for the subsea, umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF) part of the Maria field development project, in the Haltenbanken region of the Norwegian Sea.

Maria is about 200km from Trondheim on the Halten Terrace, approximately 20km east of the Kristin field and 45km south of the Heidrun field in Blocks 6407/1 and 6406/3, at 300-350m water depth.

Maria will be developed using a subsea facility tied via rigid flowlines and flexible risers to Kristin with gas lift being supplied from Åsgard B via Tyrihans and sulphate reduced seawater supplied with injection pressure from Heidrun. The discovery is expected to produce approximately 188 MMboe of oil and gas.

The contract is expected to run until the end of 2018. First oil is planned in Fall 2018.

DNV GL says that the IVB model will be used for verification of the safety critical elements, in addition to traditional third party verification of subsea production systems (SPS), pipelines, umbilical and risers. The IVB role covers all phases from design through commissioning, while the third party verification role covers design and options for involvement in the fabrication/-manufacturing/installation and commissioning phase. The company noted that this approach to handling verification is well known in the UK sector, but less used in Norway.

In December, Wintershall said it expected Maria to reach 180 MMboe recoverable resources, an increase of 40 MMboe. Previous estimates were 130 MMbbl of oil and 10 MMboe of associated gas. Wintershall now estimates the new technical production profile to be made up of about 150 MMbbl, 10 MMboe of gas, and 20 MMboe of natural gas liquids.

Wintershall is the operator of Maria with at 50% interest. Partners in the field include Petoro (30%) and Centrica Resources Norge (20%).
