Supermajors exploring GoM

A team of US and UK supermajors led by Chevron are exploring and appraising 24 jointly-help offshore leases in the northwest portion of Keathley Canyon in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico.

The deal between Chevron, BP, and ConocoPhillips, covers the Tiber and Gila discoveries, and the Gibson exploratory prospect. Further exploration and appraisal will be done of these leases, in addition to evaluating the potential of a centralized production facility, which would provide improved capital efficiency, similar to Chevron's Jack/St. Malo project.

Chevron recently acquired an interest in Tiber and Gila from BP. Chevron, BP and ConocoPhillips already held interests in the Gibson prospect.

"By collaborating across several prospects and discoveries, and incorporating the technologies and experience of the three companies, we expect to develop these fields in the most cost effective way and shorten the time to final investment decision and first production," says Jeff Shellebarger, Chevron North America E&P president.

In October, Chevron made a new oil discovery at its Guadalupe prospect in Keathley Canyon Block 10 at Well No.1 using Transocean’s Discoverer India. The well, located about 180 mi. off the Louisiana coast in 3992ft of water, was drilled to 30,173ft, where significant oil pay in the Lower Tertiary Wilcox was encountered.

Guadalupe could also be developed by utilizing the centralized production facility, which will be evaluated amongst the Guadalupe JV during the upcoming appraisal phase of that discovery. Chevron USA, Inc. is the operator of the Guadalupe discovery well with a 42.5% working interest with partners BP E&P, (42.5%) and Venari (15%).

BP has made three discoveries in the emerging Paleogene trend in the deepwater GoM: Gila in 2013, Tiber in 2009, and Kaskida in 2006.
