Alexandra Pate, a Robert Gordon University student, has won a competition to design the trophy for the 2015 Offshore Achievement Awards (OAA), taking place in March.
The brief was to design a trophy which encompassed the key themes of the OAA, which is organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers' (SPE) Aberdeen branch and supported by OE. The key themes are innovation, creativity and out of the box thinking.
The panel of judges were impressed by Pate's design, which was inspired by the underground pattern of deviated wells and will be made from a combination of stainless steel and granite. The prototype will now be developed into a final product which will be presented to winners at the black tie awards ceremony.
The challenge was presented to third year students studying 3-D Design (Ceramics & Glass, Jewelery, Product Design) at Gray’s School of Art in November by the organizers of the awards, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen Section.
Ian Phillips, SPE Aberdeen board member and chief executive of the Oil & Gas Innovation Centre, said: “Once again, this competition has showcased the superb talent that Gray’s School of Art students have to offer. The quality of the entries each year makes it extremely difficult to pick a winner and this year was no different, with four outstanding proposals.
“Alexandra’s trophy design was fantastic and really incorporates what the Offshore Achievement Awards are all about. We look forward to seeing the final trophy being presented to next year’s winners.”
Pate, who is 20 and from Dunoon, Scotland, said: “I am absolutely delighted that my trophy design has been chosen and will be presented to some of the most successful companies and individuals in the offshore energy industry. My parents are blacksmiths and our family business has been in operation for more than a century. This was where my inspiration to incorporate steel into my design came from.
“I would like to thank SPE Aberdeen for the opportunity to put our design skills to the test and I hope that all of the finalists enjoy the evening.”

The black tie event will take place on 12 March 2015 at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. Leading comedian / magician, Pete Firman, will provide the evening’s entertainment.
Firman’s skill for fusing magic and comedy has made him one of the most recognized and sought after magicians working on British television, writing and performing in a number of magic shows. He most recently starred in BBC1′s prime-time Saturday night show "The Magicians."
