CalEnergy’s Pryderi-1 well off Australia has come up dry and will be plugged and abandoned, according to joint venture partner IPB Petroleum.

The exploration well is located in the Browse basin in WA-424-P in 75m water depth. The Stena Clyde semisubmersible drilling rig reached a total depth of 694m, where no moveable hydrocarbons were encountered.
IPB says despite some residual oil shows encountered while drilling, the target reservoir at Pryderi is interpreted to be water bearing.
IBP intends to complete further interpretation and analysis on the results of the well to gain more of an understanding of the remaining prospectivity within the permit, which includes the JV’s nearby and existing Gwydion oil discovery, which has 2C contingent resources of 5MMbbls.
“Although the results of this first well are not as predicted, we know that oil is present in this part of the Browse basin and the data from this well will help us in our ongoing exploration efforts within the permit,” says Brendan Brown, IPB managing director. “IPB remains confident that the company’s existing acreage offers significant hydrocarbon prospectivity in a basin that is a focal point for so many multinational energy companies.”
Last week, CalEnergy spudded the Pryderi-1 well in which the JV estimated the prospect to have high best and low prospective resources (100%) of 78MMbbls, 32MMbbls, and 12MMbbls respectively.
IPB says the exploration well is an extension of from the WA-424-P through to WA-485-P cover an additional 27 other leads identified on pre-existing 2D seismic.
CalEnergy is the operator of WA-424-P with 25% interest. IPB holds the remaining 75%.
