Well No. 1 is located approximately 180 mi. off the Louisiana coast in 3992ft of water and was drilled to a depth of 30,173ft. using Transocean’s Discoverer India deepwater drilliship. According to Chevron, the well encountered significant oil pay in the Lower Tertiary Wilcox Sands.
Chevron says that the Guadalupe prospect is in a strong position in the Gulf of Mexico, a core focus area where the company expects significant production growth over the next two years.
Chevron subsidiary Chevron USA, Inc. began drilling the Guadalupe well in June 2014. More tests are being conducted on the discovery well and additional appraisal wells will be needed to determine the extent of the resource.
"Chevron subsidiaries are among the top producers and leaseholders in the Gulf of Mexico, averaging net daily production of 143,000 barrels of crude oil, 347MMcf of natural gas, and 15,000 barrels of natural gas liquids during 2013," said Jeff Shellebarger, president, Chevron North America Exploration and Production Company. "The company expects additional Gulf of Mexico production from the Tubular Bells and Jack/St. Malo projects by the end of the year.”
"Guadalupe is a sizeable discovery and demonstrates Venari's capability to explore for significant resources in this emerging play of the deepwater Gulf," said Brian Reinsborough, Venari Resources LLC CEO and president. "With previously announced discoveries, including the potentially giant Shenandoah field, and its expansive multi-year exploration inventory, Venari is positioned very well for continued growth in this prolific region of the Gulf."
BP has previously made three discoveries in the emerging Paleogene trend in the deepwater US Gulf of Mexico: Gila in 2013, Tiber in 2009 and Kaskida in 2006.
Chevron USA, Inc. is the operator of the Guadalupe discovery well with a 42.5% working interest with partners BP E&P, (42.5%) and Venari (15%).
The month, the deepwater drillship Pacific Sharav arrived in Keathley Canyon to begin work for Chevron at the Buckskin prospect, marking the fifth drillship working in the Gulf of Mexico for the company. Chevron and the drillship’s owner, Pacific Drilling, signed a five-year contract for the Pacific Sharav, beginning 27 August 2014.
