Australia’s Karoon Gas is planning to begin its drilling campaign the second week of November when the company will drill two to four appraisal and exploration wells off Brazil.

The wells, S-M-1037, S-M-1101, S-M-1102, S-M-1165 and S-M-1166, are in the Santos basin and will be drilled using the Olinda Star semisubmersible drilling rig.
Karoon says its Kangaroo-2 appraisal well is designed to confirm the size of the oil column, the presence and size of a possible gas cap, reservoir continuity and properties, and flow rates. This information will be crucial to assess the commerciality of the Kangaroo oil field. It will also be the basis for the front end engineering and design (FEED) phase bringing the project a step closer to commerciality.
The Kangaroo-2 appraisal well is located approximately 300m updip from Kangaroo-1. According to Karoon, it will test the thick reservoir sequence observed in all surrounding wells and it is anticipated that a 350m plus gross hydrocarbon column will be intersected in this well.
The second well in the program is the Kangaroo West-1 exploration well, targeting a net un-risked prospective resource of 330MMbbls. Kangaroo West-1 is located on the western flank of the same salt structure as Kangaroo-1 and has the same trap type and reservoir and seal intervals that have been mapped into the prospect from surrounding wells.

In Brazil’s bid round nine in March 2008, Karoon was awarded 100% equity of these five offshore exploration blocks totaling an area of 865sq km in water depths of approximately 400m in the Santos basin, located about 200km off the coast of the state of Santa Catarina. In September 2012, a farm out agreement was reached with Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. for 35% interest.
Karoon owns and operates 65% of the blocks in the Santos Basin with partner Pacific Rubiales Energy (35%).
Also in the Santos basin this week, Petrobras announced production began from FPSO Cidade de Mangaratiba, located in Block BM-S-11 of the giant Lula field. The start-up represents the first in the Iracema Sul area of the presalt Santos basin, located 300km off the coasts of the Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states.
