Gobi-1 is located in the West Natuna basin in the Natuna Sea. It was spudded using the Hakuryu-11 jackup rig with the planned total depth of 2400m below mean sea level. Drilling and evaluation is expected to take about 30 days.
Lundin Petroleum estimates the Gobi prospect to have the potential to contain unrisked, gross, prospective resources of 25MMboe. The wildcat well is designed to test the hydrocarbon potential of Oligocene and Early Miocene stacked fluvial reservoirs in a 3-way fault dependent structure in the Jemaja Basin.
According to partner, Nido Petroleum Ltd., the well is currently in the process of running the 30 in. conductor to a depth at or around 205m.
Lundin Petroleum, through its wholly owned subsidiary Lundin Gurita BV, is the operator with a 90% working interest in the Gurita PSC with partner is Nido (10%).
The duo announced plans to spud the well in late September in their Gurita PSC that covers an area of 801,800 hectares in shallow water depths of 80m or less. The PSC has several oil and gas discoveries next to the West Natuna basin including the Belida and Sembilang fields.
To the northeast, Belida had 350MMbbl reserves and reached a peak production of about 140,000bbl/d. Located to the east, Sembilang holds reserves of 30MMbbl that produced approximately 7200bbl/d.
In March, the two companies had to plug and abandon exploration wells Balquis-1 and Boni-1 in the Lundin-operated Baronang PSC, also located in the Natuna Sea, after only minor gas shows were found.
