Shell began its first deepwater development in Malaysia with the Gumusut-Kakap floating platform.

The Gumusut-Kakap field is off the coast of Malaysia in 1200m water depth and is expected to reach an annual peak oil production of approximately 135,000bbl/d. The oil will be transported to the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal onshore at Kimanis using a 200km long pipeline. It’s four decks total about 40,000sq m.

Shell is using its own Shell Smart Fields technology to carefully control production from the undersea wells to achieve greater efficiency.

According to Shell, the Gumusut-Kakap field is expected to contribute up to 25% of the country’s oil production.

The floating production is the latest addition to Shell’s 20 major deepwater projects and now that oil production is underway, work on the gas injection facilities is continuing and is expected to begin during 2015.

Shell is the operator of the Gumusut-Kakap project with 33% interest along with joint venture partners ConocoPhillips Sabah (33%), PETRONAS Carigali (20%), Murphy Sabah Oil (14%).

In September, Shell began production at its Cardamom subsea oil and gas field in the Gulf of Mexico. The Cardamom system is tied to Shell’s Auger tension leg platform, marking the seventh subsea development to come on stream through the platform since first oil achieved in 1994. Its peak production is expected to reach 50,000boe/d, increasing Auger’s production capacity to 130,000boe/d.

In August, Shell began oil production from the first well at the Bonga North West deepwater development off the Nigerian coast. Four production wells and two water injection wells in the development will be connected to the existing Bonga floating production, storage and offloading vessel using an undersea pipeline, which contributes about 40,000boe/d at peak production.
