German company RWE Dea has been awarded two offshore blocks in the Gulf of Suez in Egypt’s international bid round.

RWE will become the operator of two blocks and hold a 100% interest in the East Ras Fanar Offshore and 50% interest in the Northwest El Amal concession, with Edison International SpA holding the remaining 50%.

The two blocks increase RWE’s number of operated licenses from six to eight.

The East Ras Fanar Offshore Block covers about 187sq km and is located offshore in shallow water depth in the central Gulf of Suez close to RWE’s Ras Fanar oil field. The Northwest El Amal Block covers approximately 365sq km and lies offshore in the southern Gulf of Suez between the July and Amal oil fields, in the vicinity of the giant Morgan oil field and the latest significant oil find in the Gulf of Suez – the Saqqara field.

Dea says the upcoming work program for the concessions will include seismic reprocessing and two exploration wells at East Ras Fanar Offshore and one well at Northwest El Amal.

The license award is subject to approval from the Egyptian President.

RWE has 30 years of oil production in the Gulf of Suez and has produced more than 640MMbbl of crude during the past three decades. Production operations are carried out by the Suez Oil Co., a joint venture of RWE Dea and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corp.

RWE says the development of its natural gas project Disouq in the Egyptian Nile Delta is progressing successfully following another positive appraisal of the North West Khilala gas field with the development well NW Khilala-1- 4.

Last year, as operator, RWE started up the Breagh gas field in the North Sea as its largest field development project under its operatorship in the United Kingdom and one of the largest natural gas fields under development in the southern UK North Sea.
