McDermott completes Chevron GoM project

McDermott International, Inc. completed the Jack and St. Malo project for Chevron USA Inc. located in the Gulf of Mexico Walker Ridge area.

The just-completed project is part of the first stage of development of the Jack South, St. Malo South and St. Malo North drill centers. The Jack and St. Malo fields are located within 40km of each other and are being jointly developed with a host floating production unit located between the two fields approximately 450km south of New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Jack field lies in Waller Ridge blocks 758 and 759 in 7000ft water depth and the St. Malo field lies in block 678 in 2100ft water depth.

McDermott says the project involved the installation of jumpers, flying leads, subsea pump stations, umbilicals and subsea landing of some of the industry’s largest and complex umbilical end terminations to a host floating production platform in 7200ft of water 279mi. offshore Louisiana.

McDermott was able to execute in-house fabrication of 21 high specification rigid flowline, manifold and pump jumpers. The Houston-based company installed the structures using the Derrick Barge 50 (DB50) with its specialized deepwater lowering system.

The DB50 had more than 80 flying leads, five additional rigid production well jumpers and other subsea control and production boost components installed. The installation included three pump stations each weighing 209-tonne to a depth of 6988ft. Twelve support vessels assisted the DB50, delivering material from several Gulf Coast fabrication and staging facilities to the offshore installation site.

In addition, the North Ocean 102 (NO102) subsea construction vessel transported and installed three control and two power umbilicals totaling 65mi., along with other subsea structures.

“Our ability to fabricate the jumpers in house and utilize the combined strengths of the DB50’s deepwater lowering system and the high payload and top tension capacity of the NO102’s 330-tonne vertical lay system allowed McDermott to deliver an integrated subsea solution for our client on this complex deepwater project,” says Tony Duncan, McDermott executive vice president subsea.

Chevron sanctioned the development of the Jack/St. Malo project in 2010, marking its first operated project located in the Lower Tertiary trend in the deepwater GoM.

Chevron operates the Jack-St. Malo deepwater project with a 51% interest with partners Petrobras (25%), Statoil (21.5%), ExxonMobil (1.25%) and ENI (1.25%).
