Baker Hughes issued the August 2014 international rotary drilling rig count, showing a total of 1339 rigs operating worldwide in August 2014, outside of the US & Canada. The results show a decrease of 43 from the 1382 counted in July 2014 and an increase of 72 from the 1267 drilling in August 2013, representing an increase of 5.7% year-over-year.
Worldwide offshore
There was a slight decrease in offshore operations in August with 381 rigs operating offshore worldwide in, down 7 rigs (-3.5%) from the 395 rigs drilling in July. There was a slight increase of 7 rigs from August 2013 (+2%).
Europe had 45 rigs drilling offshore in August, down 10 rigs compared to July 2014 (-18%). The year-over-year totals remain the same at 143 rigs.
Offshore Middle East had 40 rigs drilling in August, down from 54 in July (-26%) and down 44 rigs from August 2013 (-12% year-over-year).
There were 38 rigs drilling offshore Africa in August, down 8 rigs from July (-14%). Rig totals were the same in August 2013 at 125 rigs.
In Latin America, 73 rigs were drilling offshore in August, up 5 rigs from July (+7%), and up 11 rigs from August 2013 (+3% year-over-year).
There were 119 rigs working offshore Asia-Pacific in August, down 6 rigs from July (-4%), and up 17 rigs from the 238 rigs drilling in August 2013 (+7% year-over-year increase).
Year-over-year comparisons
In August, all regions’ year-over-year totals either were double digit decrease or double digit increases in offshore drilling activity.
The largest increase, year-over-year, was in Asia with a total of 119 offshore drilling rigs, up 23 from August 2013 (+24%).
Africa followed with 38 offshore drilling rigs, a 19% increase from last year’s 32.
Latin America was down 10% to 73 offshore drilling rigs from last year’s 81. The Middle East had a total of 40 offshore drilling rigs, down from 45 (-11%) and Europe had the biggest decline with 45 offshore rigs down 18% from 2013’s 55.
