Shell made a gas discovery at the deepwater Majoram-1 well 180km off the Malaysia coast.
The Marjoram-1 well is located in Block SK318, in 800m of water.
Shell says the addition of new natural gas resources this year ensures the company is able to continue to provide cost-effective, reliable and cleaner energy options.
In April, Shell announced a deepwater natural gas discovery at the Rosmari-1 well, also located in Block SK-318. Rosmari-1 is 135km off the coast of Sarawak, in the South China Sea. It was drilled to a total depth of 2123m and encountered a gas column of more than 450m.
Shell spends an average of US$1 billion annually.
Shell signed exploration contracts with Petronas for Block SK318 and nearby Block 2B in April 2012, a total of 9000sq km. Minimum work commitments include acquisition of 3D seismic data, five electromagnetic surveys to acquire electromagnetic data and the drilling of five exploration wells in total.
Shell operates Block SK318 and holds an 85% interest with partner PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd. (15%).
