Marine scientist Dr. Quenton Dokken will examine the "Rigs to Reefs" program, an effort to transform oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico into artificial reefs, on 26 August at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University.
Dokken is president and CEO of the Gulf of Mexico Foundation. His talk will focus on the positive environmental effects when retired oil platforms are turned into more permanent artificial reefs.
Dokken's presentation is in conjunction with the library’s exhibit "Offshore Drilling: The Promise of Discovery" on display through 1 February 2015 in the Ansary Gallery of American History at the Bush Library and Museum.
The exhibit is made possible through title sponsor Shell and supporting sponsorships from Ensco, Schlumberger, Move Resource Group and the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation.
Earlier this month, OE examined decommissioning in the Gulf of Mexico and how these facilities can become fixtures in the surrounding marine life.
Requirements on decommissioning in the US Outer Continental Shelf have existed before any lease was ever signed for hydrocarbon exploration in its federal waters.
