Chevron’s Anchor-1 well was junked due to mechanical difficulties.
Located in Green Canyon block 807, 131 mi. from Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico, Anchor-1 was abandoned before reaching its geologic objectives, according to Cobalt International Energy’s 2Q 2014 results.
Chevron told OE, "After drilling to 25,800ft at the Anchor prospect, we encountered mechanical problems during tie back operations which prevented further progress, leading us to safely plug and abandon the well. The operation was carried out incident-free and with no release of any fluids into the environment."
Results from the Anchor-1 well are anticipated in early 2015.
With a 5240ft water depth, Anchor-1was spud in March 2014 and was targeting inboard lower tertiary horizons and a secondary Miocene target in the Gulf of Mexico.
Chevron is using Pacific Drilling’s Pacific Santa Ana in the Gulf of Mexico for the Anchor-1 project, in which they have a five-year contract that began in May 2012.
Chevron is the operator of Anchor-1 with 55% interest along with Cobalt (20%), Samson (12.5%) and Venari (12.5%).
