Genel spuds SM-1 well off Morocco

Genel Energy plc spud the SM-1 well in the Sidi Moussa block offshore Morocco, partner San Leon announced on 31 July 2014.

The Noble Paul Romano semisubmersible rig began drilling operations on 30 July, and is expected to take 60-90 days. Genel Energy said the well is targeting prospective resources of 300MMbbls at a 20% probability of success.

The SM-1 well, which is located at 990m water depth, will test the carbonate reservoir potential of the Sidi Moussa license, said partner Serica Energy. The Sidi Moussa license spans 5000sq km and is located approximately 75km southwest of the town of Agadir.

Oisin Fanning, San Leon Chairman, said: “Morocco remains one of the last underexplored regions of North Africa and the spudding of the SM-1 exploration well is another step towards our understanding of this basin’s hydrocarbon potential.”

Genel Energy operates the Sidi Moussa block with 60% interest. Its partners include San Leon Energy (8.5%), Serica Energy (5%), Longreach Oil & Gas (1.5%) and ONYHM, the Moroccan National Bureau of Petroleum and Mines (25%).
