Valemon topside en route to Norway

“This represents a milestone in the project, and both Statoil and Samsung employees proudly watched as the topside slowly moved,” said Norway's Statoil in the description of the 23-sec time-lapse video of the loading operation.

After 45 days transit, the topside is scheduled to arrive in the Norwegian North Sea and will be lifted onto the 160m-tall jacket using the heavy lift vessel Saipem 7000.

The 9150t steel jacket was built by Heerema Vlissingen, a unit of the Heerema Fabrication Group, and installed in 135m water depth at the field on 18 June 2012 with Thialf. [Heerema's FEED-to-installation video; Statoil's jacket installation video.]

Statoil contracted Samsung Heavy Industries in May 2011 to build the topsides; the NOK2.3 billion (US$412.4 million) EPC contract includes topsides and living quarters. Samsung then subcontracted with Norway's Grenland Group ASA (renamed Agility Group in June 2012) to provide detailed engineering and fabrication work; contract value approximately NOK200 million. The platform’s flare tower was built in the Grenland Group yard in Tønsberg.

In November 2011, SHI subcontracted Technip in Kuala Lumpur to provide detailed engineering, procurement engineering, and follow-on engineering support for the topsides. Statoil's topsides video.

The Valemon field is planned to come on stream 4Q 2014. The project is operated by Statoil (64.275%), on behalf of partners Petoro (30%), Enterprise Oil (3.225%), and Total (2.5%). The high-pressure, high-temperature field was discovered in 1985, west of Bergen, about 12km west of the Kvitebjørn installation.

The Valemon development is currently one of the largest industrial projects in Norway. The recoverable reserves are estimated at 206MMboed, including 26 billion cu m of gas, 5MMcu m of condensate, and 1MMcu m of natural gas liquids (NGL).
