Nido Petroleum Ltd., on behalf of SC 63 joint venture partners state-owned Philippine National Oil Co. Exploration Corp. (PNOC-EC) and Dragon Oil Ltd., announced that the Baragatan-1A well was spudded May 25. The wellsite is in Service Contract 63, in 230ft water depth, offshore Philippines, in the northwest Palawan basin.
Nido is using the UMW Naga 5 jackup rig (400ft independent leg cantilever).
The well targets an estimated 676 MMbbl in stacked Miocene reservoirs of the Pagasa formation. PNOC and Dragon Oil each have 40% interest in the well; Nido has 20% interest. Dragon Oil recently farmed in and has the right to take over as operator after the well is completed.
The 30in.-diameter conductor pipe was run to 568.6ft (173.3m) measured depth and successfully set across an unstable geological zone.
As of 30 May, the well had been drilled to 988m MD (956m TVD subsea) where 13.375in. casing point will be set.
Following the setting of the 13 3/8in. casing the well will be drilled to 1963m MD (1800m TVD subsea) where the 9 5/8in. casing will be set.
Background
SC 63 was awarded to Nido and PNOC-EC in November 2006. The block covers an offshore area of 1,067,000 hectares and is contiguous to the southern portions of SC 58 and SC 54B. The blocks are on trend and share similar geology with the prolific hydrocarbon province offshore Sabah, Malaysia to the southwest.
The Baragatan prospect was approved by the SC 63 Joint Venture as the drilling target for the SC 63 commitment well in April 2013. This prospect is a large, well-defined fault block.
The objective reservoir is the Pagasa sandstones which are analogous to the producing reservoir at the Galoc oil field.
