Pil discovery estimates grow

VNG Norge is to start a second sidetrack well to further assess potential at the Norwegian Sea Pil discovery after successful results were announced from an initial side-track appraisal well earlier this week.

The second side-track well, to be drilled using the Transocean Arctic semisubmersible drilling rig (pictured), will test the separate Bue prospect, which has the potential to add further volumes to the Pil discovery, said partner Faroe Petroleum. Bue has an unrisked volume potential of 8-32MM boe, says Partner Rocksource.

Rocksource already estimates Pil, which is on the Halten Terrace and has been described as “one of the most significant finds on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in recent years”, to contain 90-150MM boe.

VNG Norge and the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate estimated 50-170MM boe, prior to the initial appraisal well results. In addition, Rocksource estimates that the unrisked resource potential on the rest of the PL586 license significantly exceeds the mean volume at Pil.

The Pil discovery well (6406/12‐3S) found a gross hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir section with about 135m of oil and 91m of gas in the Upper Jurassic reservoir of the of the Rogn formation.  A drill stem test flowed at 6710 bo/d of 37° API oil from a 56/64in. choke.

Pil side-track well (6406/12-3 B) was drilled to appraise for additional hydrocarbons along the Pil structure and down-dip from the initial discovery well. It reached 3996m total depth below sea level.

Faroe Petroleum said well 6406/12-3 B encountered oil in reservoir sands with a very high net to gross ratio. Preliminary data indicate a gross hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir section with about 80m of oil in the Upper Jurassic reservoir of the Rogn formation, the firm added.

According to Faroe, the Pil discovery is within tie-back distance, about 33km south east of the Njord platform.

VNG Norge is operator with 30% interest. Partners are Spike Exploration Holdings (30%) and Rocksource Exploration Norway (15%).

According to Rocksource, VNG has secured rig capacity for “extensive follow-up exploration potential” in 2015.
