The Platform Services division of global drilling and engineering company KCA Deutag agreed on a multi-million dollar contract with ExxonMobil Canada Properties for work on the Hebron heavy oil development project.
The contract for drilling operations and maintenance services on the Hebron platform (pictured), in the Jeanne d'Arc basin, 350km southeast of St John's, Canada, is KCA's first offshore Canada.
The contract will start with an estimated 3-year pre-operations phase, followed by a 9-year operations and maintenance program, with an option to extend.
KCA Deutag’s move into Eastern Canada capitalizes on the work carried out by RDS, the rig engineering and design division of KCA Deutag, on front-end engineering and detailed design of the Hebron rig facilities since 2010.
Hebron is a heavy oil field estimated to produce more than 700MMboe recoverable resources. The field was first discovered in 1980, and is 350km southeast of St John's, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador.
It is about 9km north of the Terra Nova project, 32km southeast of the Hibernia project, and 46km from the White Rose project. The water depth at Hebron is about 92m.
The Hebron co-venturers are: ExxonMobil Canada Properties (36%), Chevron Canada Limited (26.7%), Suncor Energy Inc. (22.7%), Statoil Canada (9.7%), and Nalcor Energy (4.9%). ExxonMobil Canada Properties is the operator of the Hebron project.
