More than 500 industry professionals came together at the sparkling 28th Offshore Achievement Awards ceremony in Aberdeen, last night.
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen Section organized and hosted the awards, “the industry Oscars”, supported by Offshore Engineer, for the third consecutive year.

Anthony Onukwu, chairman of SPE Aberdeen, said: “Since re-launching the OAAs three years ago, the awards have gone from strength to strength, attracting record breaking audiences and increasing entries each year. SPE Aberdeen is proud to support innovation and recognize success across the UK energy industry.”
Ian Phillips, director of Pale Blue Dot Energy Limited and a director of SPE Aberdeen, chaired the OAA organising committee. Talking after the event, he said: “Judges were impressed with this year’s nominations, which were of an exceptionally high calibre and demonstrated expertise, innovation and great promise. We introduced two new categories to recognise the importance of environmental performance and strong leadership which proved popular. With record numbers of entries, all of the finalists should be extremely proud of themselves.’’
Those attending the event, held at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, were treated to entertainment by string quartet the Siren Strings and comedian Sean Lock, who hosted the awards ceremony.

Brian Nixon’s career has spanned the public and private sectors within the energy industry, culminating in becoming CEO at Decom North Sea in 2010. He helped grow the organization to more than 230 members and is due to retire this year. Posthumous award – Steve Walton
Steve Walton started at Wood Group in 1989, making him one of the longest serving employees. He was a materials controller in the core services team and recognized as one of the best in the business. He served as a safety rep for more than 23 years, and was regularly recognized for his role in developing and championing safety, latterly, on Step Change in Safety’s leadership team. He died last year.
As Red Spider Technology’s first employee, Steve Nicol’s commitment and leadership led him to be appointed as CEO. He helped secure the investment required for the company’s growth, which led to its acquisition by Halliburton in 2012.
>Aged 26, Ray MacKenzie, a subsea controls engineer, impressed Nexen’s senior management with the trust he has gained and by showing commitment to company values, displayed while Resident Engineer and Company Man on Nexen’s Golden Eagle development project.
Coretrax was formed in 2009 to develop tools and fluids for the wellbore clean-up and well abandonment markets. Since its launch, the company has increased its product offering, and moved into markets in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. International sales now account for 70% of business and the firm plans to open further facilities in Saudi Arabia and Iraq this year.
Hydrasun provides integrated fluid transfer, power, and control solutions to more than 58 countries, with operational bases and facilities in UK, Holland, Caspian, Dubai, Brazil and Angola, alongside sales offices and partnerships in the Gulf of Mexico, Trinidad, and Houston. Revenues for the year ended March 2013 were £106million, a figure expected to grow to £130 million this year.
Guardian’s integrated Ballistics Delivery System is a new wireline perforating system which blends new technologies with traditional tools in a single unit. On the surface, it has a logging panel for depth control, a control panel, and a perforating panel. Down-hole, the system can incorporate a multitude of systems, including depth control devices, orientation systems, and digitally controlled detonator select fire switches. The Ballistics Delivery System is entering the commercialization phase.
Tendeka’s FloSureTM autonomous inflow control device helps operators overcome the challenges of early water and gas breakthrough. It preferentially chokes unwanted produced fluids, while promoting production of oil from an entire horizontal well. More than 1000 units are manufactured per month and there have been 5000 successful applications since early 2013.
Stork identified a safety improvement for deep, confined space operations, such as platform legs and FPSO tanks. The Extended Reach Breathing Apparatus System (ERBAS) can be used in confined spaces. Multiple refill stations are deployed throughout the exit route, with ERBAS able to be refilled in less than 60 seconds, while still worn by the operative, instead of cylinders needing to be changed.

EV design and build wellbore camera systems able to work 10,000m below surface in extreme environmental conditions, on electric line, slickline, coil tubing, or drill pipe. Covering 17 locations worldwide, EV makes over 100 well interventions a month for more than 300 clients.
TWMA’s TCC RotoMil and TCC RotoTruck handle and treat drill cuttings at source, reducing cost, environmental impact, and safety risks, using a process of thermal desorption, which separates drill cuttings and associated materials into oil, water, and solids for recycling and reuse.
The Underwater Centre identified an opportunity to work with Skills Development Scotland to train Scots into commercial divers. The project helps workers transfer land-based engineering, fabrication, and construction skills into the subsea sector. In 2012, eight Scots were trained into commercial divers. In 2013, the figure exceeded 60.
