Mariner FSU gets Wärtsilä pumps

Finland's Wärtsilä has signed a contract for a range of pumping solutions for a new floating storage unit (FSU) to be used on the Mariner oilfield in the North Sea (pictured).

Wärtsilä's contract is with South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), which is building the FSU for operator Statoil.

Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for spring 2015, and the FSU is expected to be in operation in 2017.

The Wärtsilä supply scope includes 45 deepwell process and cargo offloading pumps, with electric motors and variable speed drive (VSD) panels, three fire water pump skids, and two ballast pumps.

Statoil's Mariner field is the largest offshore development in UK waters, and the field is estimated to produce an average of 55,000 bbl/d for 30 years. The new FSU will have a capacity of 850,000 bbl.

The Mariner Field is on the East Shetland platform of the UK North Sea, about 150km east of the Shetland Isles.

Statoil acquired 44.44% and the operatorship for Mariner from Chevron in 2007. Statoil then acquired a further 20.66% of Mariner from Nautical Petroleum in 2010.

JX Nippon Exploration and Production (U.K.) Ltd (28.89%) and Dyas UK Ltd (6%) are the co-venture companies in the Mariner field project.

Earlier this week Wärtsilä also signed a repeat integrated solution order with the Cosco (Qidong) Offshore Co. Ltd shipyard, covering another DP3 offshore accommodation rig, being built for Singapore-based Axis Offshore.

The Wärtsilä solution includes the main power generation system, the propulsion system, the electric and automation system, and the automation safety system.

The vessel is expected to enter service in January 2016. Wärtsilä will begin deliveries of its equipment during 1H 2014.

This follows a similar order placed earlier last year by the same company for an identical comprehensive, fully integrated Wärtsilä power, propulsion and positioning system.

The semisubmersible accommodation rig is being built by Cosco in China. Wärtsilä will co-operate closely with the yard’s project team and will have a site management team to supervise installation of the Wärtsilä equipment.

Scope of Supply:

  • 6 x 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 engines
  • 6 x Wärtsilä Underwater de-mountable thrusters FS3500/NU
  • Wärtsilä Propulsion Drives
  • Wärtsilä Medium and Low voltage switchboards
  • ICSS (Integrated Control & Safety System) and PMS (Power Management System)
  • Fire & Gas system
