Petrofac designs multipurpose vessel

London-listed oil and gas industry service provider Petrofac has placed the first long-lead orders for its new in-house-designed deepwater derrick lay vessel, to be built at the Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co., Ltd (ZPMC) yard in China.

Petrofac said the JSD 6000-design vessel (pictured) will be available for construction and installation activities in early 2017, and is part of a "strategic evolution" of the business.

The unit will be based on a customized ULSTEIN SOC 5000 design, developed by Ulstein Sea of Solutions, a Netherlands-based subsidiary of Ulstein.

Ulstein said the vessel has a combination of a 600-tonne Remacut S-lay system via a centre firing line below main deck, and a 2000-tonne IHC EB J-lay system via a moonpool. "This double deck configuration, a distinctive feature in Ulstein Sea of Solutions designs, allows for a large, unobstructed deck area and below deck pipe fabrication," says Ulstein.

It is Ulstein's third customized version of the ULSTEIN SOC 5000 design, after the Seven Borealis and Aegir, which are both already in operation.

The vessel contracts awarded consist:
  • Shipyard, for hull and marine systems:  ZPMC, China
  • Electrical and control systems: Kongsberg Maritime, Norway
  • 2000-tonne J-lay tower:  IHC Engineering Business, UK
  • 5000-tonne revolving main crane and four deck cranes:  National Oilwell Varco, USA
  • Two deepwater 750-tonne winches:  Remazel Engineering, Italy
  • 600-tonne S-lay tensioners and pipe handling equipment:  Remacut, Italy
  • Nominated classification society:  Lloyds Register Group

Petrofac said the vessel would build on its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) project management and engineering capability.

Its design, which integrates the j-Lay, s-Lay and derrick functions, will provide Petrofac with access to high-end turnkey opportunities in the high growth deepwater and SURF markets, and expand access to shallow water EPCI projects, said the firm.

Yves Inbona, managing director of Petrofac’s offshore capital projects business, which was launched in 2012, said: “The Petrofac JSD 6000 will give us the ability to access top tier EPCI opportunities with a best-in-class multi-purpose vessel.”

Ayman Asfari, Petrofac Group CEO, said: “These orders mark the next major step in Petrofac’s strategic evolution, which is built on the expansion and enhancement of our expertise and capabilities from our core areas into markets where we can provide a differentiated offer to our customers."

KONGSBERG has been appointed as the supplier and integrator of all electrical, telecom and integrated control systems for the JSD 6000. The contract worth more than NOK 230 Million was awarded by ZPMC to Kongsberg Maritime Engineering (KME), a wholly owned subsidiary of Kongsberg Maritime.
