BG spuds Kenyan well

BG spudded its Sunbird-1 exploration well offshore Kenya, joint venture partner Pancontinental Oil and Gas announced. The well is in license area L10A, ub 721m water depth.

The Deepsea Metro 1drillship is expected to take 50-60 days to drill 3000m below sea level, with an option to extend to 3700m. The vessel is a dynamic positioning ship, owned by the Metrostar Group and Odfjell Drilling joint venture. Extensive wireline logging, and pressure and fluid sampling are planned.

The well will be plugged and abandoned, but could be re-entered at a later date, Pancontinental said.

An extensive trend of Miocene reefs is evident in Pancontinental’s four license areas, all located offshore southern Kenya, Pancontinental says.

BG Group operates the Kenya L10A license, with 50% interest. Its joint venture partners are PTTEP (31.25%) and Pancontinental (18.75%).
