Exxon gets Madagascar extensions

Exxon Mobil Corp. has received extensions on three of its production sharing contract licenses offshore Madagascar, the company announced on 6 November 2013. The supermajor said the extensions will enable the resumption of exploration activities on the Ampasindava, Majunga and Cap Saint Andre licenses.

Exxon's affiliates intend to resume exploration work and environmental assessments for shore-based and offshore operations in preparation for deepwater drilling.

ExxonMobil Exploration and Production (Northern Madagascar) Limited operates the Ampasindava PSC license with 70% interest. Its partner Sterling Energy holds 30% interest.

The Ampasindava block is located in the Majunga deepwater basin, off northwest Madagascar.

Sterling Energy announced plans to drill the Sifaka prospect on the Ampasindava PSC in 2015-2016. Sifaka, Sterling says, is thought to contain, unrisked, gross best estimate prospective resources of 1.2 billion bbls.

ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Madagascar Majunga Limited operates the Majunga license with 50% interest. Its partners include BG International (30%), PetroVietnam E&P (10%) and SK Innovation (10%).

The Majuna block covers around 15,840sq km in water depths ranging from around 200-3000m, off the northwest coast of Madagascar.

ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Madagascar Limited operates the Cap Saint Andre license, also off the northwest coast, with 100% interest.
