OE13: Subsea power grid for 2018

Published

Siemens is hoping to have a complete subsea power grid installed on the seabed by 2018, according to its head of subsea power solutions.

The division has been formed by Siemen’s acquisition of Bennex from Subsea Technology Group in 2011, and the Tronic, Matre brands in 2012, giving Siemens the capability to create a complete power grid offering.

Speaking to OE@OE, Mark Jones, global business development manager for subsea, based at Siemens’ subsea centre of excellence in Ulverston, UK, said demand for subsea power solutions was increasing, as longer step outs are designed with requirements for good quality power.

He said Siemen’s aim is to have a complete subsea power grid ready by 2018. Transformers have been tested. The firm is now testing switch gear and variable speed-drives and hopes to have the entire system qualified to 3000m water depth next year.

At Ulverston, Siemens is in the detailed design phase of a 36,000v (36kv) wet mateable subsea connector, able to function in 3,000m water depth.
