Pipeline rehabilitation and life extension specialist Swagelining lay claim to the longest ever single insertion pull length of 1500m while installing polymer liners into pre-constructed subsea pipeline spools. Under contract to Subsea 7, which last summer secured a $50 million SURF contract from Dana Petroleum (E&P) for work at the Triton field in the Greater Guillemot area of the UK North Sea, Swagelining designed and installed a polymer lining solution for 25km of 10in water injection line to be installed by the Seven Navica following fabrication at Norway’s Vigra spool base. The spool base, near Alesund, runs approximately 2037m from seaward end of stalks to a purpose-built deepwater quay.
‘Engineering led design modifications to the equipment spread, confirmed by an extensive pre-qualification testing programme, enabled towing loads to be reduced, which in turn allowed record 1500m liner installation lengths to be repeatedly achieved. This development consequentially improved construction times,’ reported Swagelining managing director Stephen Barnes.
‘The liner was installed quickly and efficiently into the carbon steel host pipe achieving the targeted rate of one constructed string per day,’ he noted. ‘Terminations and jointing were completed using the flangeless WeldLink connector fitting, which allowed the pipeline strings to be welded and spooled onto the reel lay vessel for installation on the seabed.’
Swagelining has since been awarded two further North Sea water injection pipeline projects by Subsea 7, due for fabrication and installation this year.
