Unionized workers at Brazil's state-controlled oil company Petróleo Brasileiro SA, or Petrobras, said they will start a general strike on Saturday to press for higher wages as they negotiate a new contract.

A group representing 12 oil worker unions said in a statement on Wednesday they were fighting for their rights and that Petrobras was proposing a yearly raise that was below the expected annual inflation. Another group representing another five oil worker unions said their members would also strike.

The number of workers and business units that observe union strikes tends to vary at Petrobras, as do the subsequent effects on the company's operations.

Petrobras did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
