Hurricane Energy's pilot well on the basement reservoir Lancaster discovery West of Shetland has indicated resources "significantly greater" than the firm's 200 MMbbl base case, the company said this morning.
Hurriane has completed testing and logging on the 205/21a-7 Pilot Well using the Transocean Spitsbergen semisubmersible drilling rig (pictured). The well flowed 38 API oil with no formation water at 6600 b/d on its own and then at 11,000 b/d with the use of an electrical submersible pump.
Hurricane will now plug the well before side-tracking the top-hole to drill the 7Z horizontal sidetrack well. This is designed to provide a second future production well and additional information to help optimally plan the Lancaster field development.
Dr Robert Trice, Hurricane's CEO, said: "I am delighted that the Pilot Well has confirmed a significant oil column deeper than the 2C case set out in the company's CPR. Our initial assessment of the well results, which are subject to refinement of the provisional data, suggest that the Lancaster field is likely to be significantly greater than the 200 MMbbl 2C case.
"The combination of high flow rates, an extensive oil column and underlying aquifer materially de-risks Hurricane's plans for a future Lancaster field development and further underlines the potential of the fractured basement West of Shetland."
Hurricane Energy was formed in 2004, to focus on naturally fractured basement West of Shetland. It was awarded its first license, P1368, containing the Lancaster field, in 2005.
Prior to the latest well, Lancaster has had four wells drilled on it, the first by Shell in 1974 and then three by Hurricane, in 2009-2014, proving up 207 MMbbl of 2C contingent resource.
Hurricane has been considering a simple, one-well, first phase early production system (EPS) for Lancaster, using a DP FPSO with a disconnectable turret and minimal subsea and process infrastructure.
