Repsol encountered high quality oil at the ultra deepwater well León, in the Keathley Canyon 642 block located in the US Gulf of Mexico.

At León, located 352km from the Louisiana coast, Repsol found more than 150m of net oil pay within a column of over 400m. The well was drilled to 1865m water depth, reaching a total of 9684m using the ENSCO DS-5.
Repsol is the operator of León with 60% interest. Colombia's Ecopetrol holds the remaining 40%.
Last week, also in the Keathley Canyon, Chevron encountered significant oil pay in the Lower Tertiary Wilcox Sands in Block 10 at the Guadalupe prospect using Transocean’s Discoverer India deepwater drillship. Chevron is conducting additional tests at the discovery well and additional appraisal wells in the area to determine the extent of the resource.
Repsol is also working with Chevron and other partners at the nearby Buckskin well, located 50km from León. In mid-October, the Pacific Drilling’s deepwater drillship Pacific Sharav arrived in Keathley Canyon to begin operations at the Chevron-operated well under a five-year, US$1 billion contract.
Repsol holds 119 blocks in Gulf of Mexico with a share in the BHP Billiton-operated Shenzi field, which has about 400MMbbl and boasts 16 wells in production connected to two platforms.
