Kleven’s Myklebust Verft signed a contract with Ocean Yield ASA for modifications of the Aker Wayfarer vessel to become a deepwater subsea equipment support vessel (SESV).

According to Kleven, the modifications will allow the Aker Wayfarer to install and retrieve subsea trees and modules, including subsea structures and manifolds. The vessel is due to begin operations for Petrobras after completion of the modification work scheduled, within 4Q 2016.

Kleven says that the Aker Wayfarer will be the largest vessel that has been in dock at Myklebust Verft, measuring at 157m long and 27m wide.

“We acquired this dock two years ago, in order to facilitate service, repair and rebuilding of larger offshore vessels, just like Aker Wayfarer,” says Ståle Rasmussen, Kleven CEO. “Myklebust Verft’s location, in the very heart of the maritime cluster at Sunnmøre, is a great advantage for all parties involved, and this project serves as a great example of local cooperation between Kleven, Vard and Rolls-Royce.”

The Aker Wayfarer is designed by Vard Design, and delivered from Vard Søviknes in 2010. Rolls-Royce in Hjørungavåg will deliver the top-side equipment.

“This is a very important contract for Rolls-Royce, and it shows that the offshore industry has taken yet another step in accepting the superior performance of synthetic fiber ropes for lifting operations in deep and ultra-deep waters,” says John Knudsen, Rolls-Royce president commercial marine.

Modification work was announced in mid-September, when Petrobras awarded Aker Solutions’ subsidiary, Aker Oilfield Services (AKOFS) a US$465 million contract to provide subsea intervention services offshore Brazil.

The five-year contract, set to begin in 4Q 2016, has an option for a five-year extension.

The Aker Wayfarer began operations offshore Brazil in June 2013 for an undisclosed customer for a period of 230 days. Previously, the vessel handled subsea installation on a yearlong campaign offshore Brazil during 2011 and 2012 for Brazilian independent OGX at its Waimea development.
