Lundin Norway AS completed drilling on wildcat well 7/4-3, 24 km north of the Brynhild field in the southern part of the North Sea. Lundin plugged and abandoned the well as a dry hole.
Drilled by the Maersk Guardian to a vertical depth of 2957 m below sea surface, the well was terminated in the Smith Bank formation in the Triassic. Water depth is 82 m.
The Maersk Guardian will proceed to production license 148 in the North Sea to drill production wells in the Brynhild field where Lundin Norway AS is also the operator.
The primary exploration target for the well was to prove petroleum in Upper Triassic reservoir rocks (the Skagerrak formation). The secondary target was to prove petroleum in chalk in the Ekofisk and Tor formations (Palaeocene and Upper Cretaceous). Reservoir rocks were not encountered in the Triassic, while the reservoir in the chalk was as expected, the well encountered no hydrocarbons and was plugged and abandoned as a dry hole.
This was the first exploration well in PL495 and PL495B. The licenses were awarded in APA 2008 and APA 2011. The costs of the exploration well 7/4-3 and associated license costs will likely be expensed during the 2Q 2013.
Lundin Norway operates with 60% working interest in PL495 and PL495B. Its partner, Tullow Oil Norge AS, holds 40% working interest.
